Time and its Shenanigans

Time goes by quicker than I thought. If I were back in a science class now, it would seem impossible for me to measure it's acceleration. My calculator would go poof!,  and the science teacher would be completely exhausted by the end of the lesson. For me, it was only the beginning of the year 2024 yesterday, when I could still hear the fireworks. Time seems so small and yet infinitive at times. My alarm clock would disagree though, he seems to think time's just perfectly fine and I just need to eat my breakfast a little faster. I can't blame him, he was made to scream at me while I try to sleep in a little extra 5 minutes. Though, sometimes, especially when I'm waiting for time to go faster, it seems as if I can almost see it grinning mischievously at me and deliberately going slower. And when I've finally settled down in front of my favourite Netflix series, it goes way quicker that it's supposed to.  Time and its shenanigans; if it were a book title of a gui

But together we can do so much more 

Than just opening an impenetrable door

We don’t have to go through all that pain on our own


If we just appreciate each other

If we just care for one another


We could do it all together

Because that’s all that matters

Een Surinaamse beleving (2)

De vlag wappert heen en weer. Daar sta je, op het onafhankelijkheidsplein. Met een cup schaafijs in de handen die rustig aan het smelten is door de hete zon. Maar je blijft daar staan, kijkend naar de felle kleuren van de vlag. Het leek bijna op een droom, eentje die heel ver weg lijkt. Met de groene pet door de rijstvelden van Nickerie lopen, de cassave in Saramacca met heel veel kracht uit de grond trekken of de manja’s waarvoor we zo nodig in de grote bomen moeten klimmen om het te plukken. Of we maken van die lekkere aardvruchten, batjauw en eieren een verrukkelijke “her heri”. Met die lekkere roti die zo moeilijk rond te krijgen is, “wan bigi pampun” oogsten en erbij eten. En we vergeten dat groot glas met koude cola niet. “Wit santi”, waar we het mooie witte zand door onze vingers kunnen laten glijden. Waar we allemaal samen gepropt in de pick-up naar colakreek gaan. Een Surinaamse beleving (1)

Het is pas wanneer je in de korjaal zit met de handen achter het hoofd, terwijl je over het water kijkt, de warme zon op je gezicht voelt en een toekan in een boom spot, of wanneer je in een warung zit en een lekkere vettige bami samen met een sate en pinda sambel aan het eten ben, dan pas… Dan dringt het echt door. “Ai mang, dit is Suriname.” In verschillende landen over de hele wereld heb je verschillende tafelmanieren. In Amerika en Europa bijvoorbeeld is er speciale plek waar je de vork moet neerleggen of met welke hand je het mes moet vastpakken, in Azië mag je soms helemaal niet praten tijdens het eten. Maar in Suriname is het net als altijd heel anders. Zo lang er lekker eten, een glas cola met ijs of Fernandes soft is om de dorst te lessen is het altijd feest. Maak niet uit of je je vork of lepel met je rechter of linkerhand houdt, of als je eerst even een glas water drinkt voordat je gaat eten. Netflix

Outside is a cold lovely evening. The sun is nowhere to be seen anymore and the darkness took over. Owls with big eyes on trees, dogs sleeping, plants all calm and sweet, the wind that sings a nice melody. Beautiful and quiet as everything should be. But inside... A hand rummaging all the way through the kitchen cupboard. The crackling of the chips, the popping of the popcorn in the microwave and the hissing sound of the soft drink that is being opened.  "Don't start the movie without me!" We are all sitting on the sofa, hands that go in and out the big bowls filled with tasty crisps that we bought this afternoon at the supermarket and the popcorn that we found somewhere in the back of the kitchen cupboard. Eyes are following every single movement on the TV. "Whaaattt!"  "The good guy is the bad guy?" Ever since the covid pandemic sneaked into our world, Netflix became a hit.
